The Lavender Rhino became a symbol of gay resistance in Boston, MA in 1974. Two artists as part of Gay Media Action created an add campaign to bring visibility to the LGBTQ community and it included a cartoon of a lavender Rhino, "...a much maligned and misunderstood animal” In response, Metro Transit Advertising doubled their rates and Gay Media Action were initially unable to fund the advertising campaign. There was public outcry, protests, and legal action, but Metro Transit Advertising doubled down and would not lower their rates to fair prices. In response, a lavender Rhino made an appearance at the 1974 and 1976 Pride Parades in Boston. In 1987, a Lavender Rhino flag was raised at Boston City Hall and has been a beloved symbol about making visibility and a stronger community.
