Ecuadorian Hummingbird

A species of hummingbirds, the Chimborazo Hillstar in Ecuador, have been found nesting together. The scientists who discovered this compared the nesting pattern to that of a bee colony. Hummingbirds are known to be aggressive defenders of their territory and extremely independent. These nests were found in the high altitudes of the Andes suggesting that the difficult environment encouraged the evolution of these hummingbirds to develop colonies. As we move through this the U.S. with a loneliness epidemic, the dismantling of our social support systems, and the demonization of the poor and already disenfranchised groups, learning about fierce defenders learning how to be soft next to each other has felt like a small map forward.
